How to Teach Your Kids the Importance of Dental Care Early

The Importance of Dental Care

Even primary (baby) teeth are important for speech, chewing, and self-esteem. Therefore, teaching your child proper oral hygiene is one of the best things you can do for them. Once established, caring for their teeth will be a good habit that lays the groundwork for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Brushing

Before your child reaches the age of two or three, you should brush your child’s teeth for them. Skip using toothpaste until your child can avoid swallowing it. Once your child is ready, you can begin teaching them to brush. Choose a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush and use only a tiny amount of toothpaste. Watch over them to make sure they rinse and spit after brushing.
Until they get the hang of it, always brush your child’s teeth after they finish or before they begin. It’s often a good idea to brush their teeth first, then ask them to repeat what you just did. As you brush, explain each step of the process to your child.

Make it Fun

There are several things you can do to make dental care fun. Let your child pick a song they would like to play while they brush – make sure it plays for two to three minutes, as that will give them a good idea of what the right amount of time to brush their teeth feels like. Brushing your teeth together as a family will set a good example and make it more fun for your child as well.
Let your child pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste. This will encourage them to brush and make dental care more enjoyable for them. If they dislike the flavor of regular toothpaste, try different flavors – there are lots to choose from.

Book Regular Visits with Your Kid’s Dentist in Highland Park

Finally, schedule regular dental checkups for your child, with the first one being around their first birthday.
