What are Veneers?

Customized to fit the wearer’s smile, veneers are thin, porcelain shells that are designed to fit over the natural tooth. The porcelain used in veneers is durable enough for permanent wear. This material is tooth-colored and stain-resistant, with a natural translucency that helps it blend in well with your other teeth.
The Process
First Steps
The process will look different depending on the results of your consultation. If you decide to move forward with veneers at one of our facilities, our cosmetic dentist in Highland Park or Mundelein may review your records, take x-rays, and conduct a survey of your mouth. If it’s determined that you are a good candidate, we will determine how many veneers you’ll need to meet your ultimate smile goals. It’s possible to have just one veneer made for a single problem tooth, but in many cases multiple are preferred for best results.
Preparing Your Teeth
With a plan in place, your dentist will need to trim roughly a half-millimeter of enamel from each tooth receiving a veneer. This process makes room for the restorations to come. Your dentist will then take impressions of your teeth that will be sent to the lab making your veneers. You may be given temporary veneers while your permanent set is being manufactured.
Placing the Veneers
On your return visit, our cosmetic dentist in Highland Park or Mundelein will check the fit of the veneers as well as the color match. If no adjustments need to be made, your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and the surfaces slightly roughened to help adhere the veneer. A special type of cement will be used to bind each veneer to your tooth, cured with an ultraviolet light.
Follow-up
Your dentist may request a follow-up appointment to check that the veneers are properly placed. If you report having issues with them or the placement seems off upon inspection, your dentist will help make any necessary adjustments at this point.
