Making the Dentist Friendly for Kids

Loud noises, weird sensory feelings, and overall, a doctor visit. Many kids are not excited when they are new to the dentist and now have to go twice a year. How can we make this experience less stressful and more exciting and fun for children? Check out some of our ideas when you take your kids to the dentist in Mundelein.

Lay it all out

Normally, we would steer clear of having our children stare at a screen, but YouTube videos are a great way to have fun with your little one while learning about the dentist. They will be able to see everything for themselves and relieve some of the stress if they are scared or nervous. You can even visit the dentist’s website to show them pictures of the office, employees, and appliances.

Dentists are good!

Dentists – the superheroes for the teeth. It’s important to take good care of your teeth and children should be aware that the dentists are there for your health. Brushing and flossing are routines. So is a visit to the dentist, even though it doesn’t happen as often as the other two.

Music, toys, and goodie bags, oh my!

Make the dentist an adventure, something that excites your child and has them counting down until it’s time for the next visit. Some dentist offices have toys to play in the waiting room. During the procedure, you can also have your child listen to music to distract them from loud sounds. Most dentists hand out a goodie bag filled with floss, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and sometimes even a sticker. Children love goodies and remind them that they get to leave with the goodie bag if they are good for their visit.

Smile

Sitting in the room with your child as they are in the dentist’s chair and just smiling can be all they need. Children react off of your emotions. If you are smiling and making sure everything is okay, they will have nothing to be scared of. So, smile!

Our kids’ dentist in Mundelein is a pleasant experience. If you follow the above guidelines, your child will have a seamless and happy visit with their dentist. They’ll be counting down the days until their next appointment!
