Paying Attention to Your Oral Health
In this last of our series on common dental symptoms, we will investigate a few more symptoms that may require a visit to our dental clinic in Mundelein. While some minor symptoms are usually nothing to be concerned about, receding or swollen gums may be a sign of a more serious condition.
Receding Gums
If you notice your teeth look longer than they used to, and that your gums are beginning to recede, this could be a warning sign of serious gum disease – periodontitis. While receding gums may have less serious causes, like hormonal changes, brushing your teeth too aggressively, or even aging, when gums recede significantly, the exposed roots can become vulnerable to decay and tooth sensitivity.
When you notice receding gums, it is wise to schedule an appointment with our team of general dentists in Mundelein or Highland Park to help determine the cause.
Swollen Gums
There are several reasons why your gums might swell, but this may also be a warning sign of gum disease. If the swelling is confined to a small area, one possibility is that a small piece of food has gotten wedged beneath the gumline. Flossing your teeth may dislodge the food and relieve the problem.
Inflammation caused by vitamin deficiencies, pregnancy, and infections can also cause your gums to swell. If swelling doesn’t resolve in two weeks of following your regular oral hygiene routine, you should call North Suburban Dental to set up an appointment.
