Tips for a Healthy Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner, which for many children means pounds of free candy and an opportunity to stockpile sweets for the winter. As exciting as this is for kids, Halloween can present parents with a variety of challenges. Thankfully, our dentist in Highland Park understands the oral health risks associated with candy indulgence, and how to mitigate them. Here are a few helpful hints to ensure your child’s teeth are healthy and happy.

Timing

The best time to eat Halloween candy, or any sugary treats for that matter, is during or shortly after meals. Saliva production increases while you eat, which helps to reduce the effect of acids produced by bacteria in your mouth and clear out unwanted food particles. Because of this, you’ll want to avoid snacking on sugary treats throughout the day.

Be Selective

Choose the sweets that you and your kids are eating carefully! Avoid hard candy that lingers in your mouth and sticky candy that clings to your teeth. Candies that stay in the mouth for a long period of time put your teeth at an increased risk for tooth decay.

Educate on Treats and Teeth

Take advantage of this opportunity and have a conversation with your kids about candy and their teeth. Make sure they know that too many sweets can compromise their oral health, resulting in cavities or worse. Above all else, remind them to brush and floss after eating their Halloween haul!

By educating your kids on the importance of dental hygiene, you’ll save yourself time, money, and trips to the dentist in Highland Park.
